The VK56DE Engine has several common problems:

1. Timing chain stretching: Frequent acceleration and high loads can lead to timing chain stretching already by 50,000 km⁴.

2. Catalytic converter problems: Bad fuel can destroy the catalytic converter, crumbs from which get into the combustion chamber⁴.

3. Increased oil consumption: This may be due to the formation of scoring on the cylinder walls⁴.

4. Unreliable fuel injection pump: Problems with the high-pressure fuel pump can arise due to poor-quality fuel and oil⁵.


Reviews from car owners and expert opinions indicate the presence of the following shortcomings:

 

Increased noise background - stretching and displacement of timing marks leads to incorrect operation of the driving unit. It also "at the top of its voice" signals about malfunctions.

Unreliable fuel injection pump - the problem occurs due to low-quality fuel and/or oil. The manufacturer recommends replacement every 75-90 thousand km.

Loss of traction, jerky movement - the cornerstone is in the catalyst, which quickly becomes clogged. Car owners recommend replacing it with a flame arrester.

Brief historical background

The VK45DE engine, which has already proven its reliability, was taken as a basis. The main task of the designers was to adapt the driving unit to the dimensions of large cars.

 

The specialists made the following structural changes:

the cylinder block was modified, the height of the component was increased;

larger diameter cylinders were installed, and the piston stroke of the new crankshaft was 92 mm;

the timing chain increased the reliability of the design and its performance.

Further modernization led to the appearance of the VK56VD, whose main difference was the innovative direct fuel injection system. This increased the power characteristics of the cars, torque.
