Self-discharge of the Nissan Leaf ZE0 high-voltage battery and solution to the problem

Nissan Leaf 2010-2012 is an electric car that is not very popular, but quite common. Many drivers do not like it, considering the first generation “raw”, with many “childhood sores”. Although low cost, economical movement within a city or even a region, simple maintenance are the indisputable advantages of the first generation Leaf.

But this production series has one nuance - automatic switching on of the high-voltage battery when the car is parked. Because of this, the main power source is discharged at the most inopportune moment. By experience, experimenting on their cars, Master Service Electro engineers found a solution to the problem.

How to see the problem?

For example, the Leaf charging indicator constantly blinks. This is the blue light on the dashboard. Below is a diagram from the factory technical documentation.

Under what circumstances does a high-voltage battery discharge?

You returned home and parked your electric car overnight without plugging it in. Or, on the contrary, they arrived at the office and left the car until the end of the working day. When you return and turn on the ignition, you will find that the high-voltage battery has seriously sagged while parked.

This happens most often with those electric cars whose battery is in good condition. Either it was recently repackaged or replaced.

Owners of the Nissan Leaf ZE0 are aware of this nuance. Various theories have been put forward. The MSE masters worked through them and discarded them. Namely:

  • Discharge occurs due to a faulty BMS board. To check this story, the craftsmen replaced the VVB on our employee’s experimental electric car. Instead of the old factory one, we installed a new 45 kW with a BMS of our own design. Problem still exists.
  • The battery self-discharges due to a worn-out 12V battery. During parking, it draws upon itself the entire resource. Master Service Electro specialists also tested this hypothesis by installing a new 12V battery, but the situation did not change.
  • The cooling circulation pump is to blame. More precisely, incorrect operation of the pump while the electric vehicle is parked, due to which it can drain the main power source. The version has been checked. The antifreeze pump has nothing to do with it.
  • In winter, the battery heats itself. Because of this, it is discharged. This statement is also incorrect. Firstly, there are versions of the Nissan Leaf where heating is not provided. Secondly, even if it is there, it starts working when the ignition is on and the ambient temperature is -16 C.
