With the introduction of a new series of Nissan Altima cars in 2002, the Nissan Maxima, which at that time was at the peak of popularity, so to speak, fell into decline. Although both models were built on the same D-platform and offered the same VQ-series V6 engine, Maxima sales declined and Nissan now outsells the Altima and Maxima at a 5-to-1 ratio.

With a new 290-horsepower V6 engine, a new look to the future and a dedication to the 4-Door Sports Car (4DSC) lineage, the 2009 Nissan Maxima once again looks and performs like not only the top-of-the-line sedan in the Nissan lineup, but also a serious player among the front-wheel drive sedans of any modern manufacturer.

Since 2002, the V6 engine in the Altima has been boosted to 270 hp, while in the Nissan Maxima the same engine has a marginally but noticeably lower 255 hp.

With the advent of the 2009 Nissan Maxima, there are new reasons for this car to reappear in the ranks of standard sedans. For starters, the interesting fact is that the new rebuilt 3.5L V6 engine with 290 hp is now superior to the Altima's engine, second only to the 306 hp in the sporty 350Z. And the car's software, called Nissan Xtronic, now allows the use of a new automatic transmission (continuously variable transmission), which is much better than the previous one.

As a result, the overall effect of the 2009 Nissan Maxima is quite consistent with the Infiniti sedan. It is expensive, highly equipped, very comfortable, sporty and completely superior to its economical predecessor, the Nissan Altima.
