Engine
- All engines that were installed on the Maxima QX are V6 VQ series, which to this day are found on powerful Nissan and Infiniti. On Maximas we mainly use the younger 2.0 VQ20DE and the larger 3.0 VQ30DE. The block here is aluminum, the timing chain drive is chain driven (chain life is 200-250 thousand, wear reveals itself in advance by rustling, then by ringing), there are no hydraulic compensators in the valve drive (every 100-150 thousand it is worth checking the gaps). The piston life is potentially under 500 thousand, but if you wish, you can screw it up much earlier.
- There are few typical problems with VQ Engine. During inspection, you can find out when the intake manifold gaskets were last changed - over the years they harden, shrink, and air “from the street” begins to leak into the manifold. Of course, with dust and dirt, which is bad.
- Another problem with VQ engines is the idle speed controller. If you do not preventively change the throttle valve gasket, a little antifreeze leaks into the body, which is enough to cause a short circuit in the idle motor. The saddest thing is that an expensive engine control unit can shorten the chain. Conclusion: if the car seller himself has not recently changed the throttle gasket, this should be done immediately after purchase.
Automatic, manual, transmission
- The automatic transmission here is Jatco RE4F04A, also known as JF403E. An excellent 4-speed unit, with an oil change after 60 thousand it can last up to 250-300 thousand without major repairs with the replacement of the clutch pack, some solenoids and the torque converter locking lining. The only surprise is the cut off splines of the rear planetary gear, which happens on the 3-liter Maxima that are raced. Without removal, you can diagnose it not only with a scanner, but also by leaks from the oil seal.
If it is there, and also neglected, you can prepare for repairs, because the transmission is starved of oil can't stand it.
Suspension, brakes, chassis, steering
- The suspension design is very conservative and simple: MacPherson strut in front, elastic beam with Panhard rod in the rear - real old school for the business class of the 2000s. The handling is not racing, but the ride is smooth and maintenance is cheap.
- For many people, the steering rack knocks and leaks. In case of leaks, they simply use a repair kit with seals, and a small knock, provided that the rack is dry and the anthers are intact, is usually simply ignored, since it rarely progresses. The problem lies either in the play between the rack (shaft) itself and the guide bushing, or in the silent blocks of the rack.
