Mazda RX-4 - Main Problems

Mazda RX-4 (1972–1978) – classic coupe and sedan with a rotary engine 12A or 13B. Although the car has a reputation for reliability and power, owners face a number of typical problems.

1. Engine (12A, 13B) and its malfunctions

⚠ High wear of rotor seals – reduces compression, leads to loss of power.

⚠ Engine overheating – poor cooling system operation can cause thermal damage.

⚠ High oil consumption – normal for rotary engines, but requires constant monitoring.

⚠ Gluttony – average fuel consumption is 15-20 l/100 km.

🔧 Solution: change oil regularly (every 3,000 – 5,000 km), check compression, install a more efficient radiator.

2. Carburetor and fuel system

⚠ Clogged carburetor – unstable engine operation, dips during acceleration.

⚠ Air leaks – affects the operation of the mixture, leads to unstable speed.

🔧 Solution: clean the carburetor every 20,000 km, replace gaskets and hoses.

3. Electrics and ignition

âš  Problems with electronic ignition - over time, the contacts oxidize, disrupting spark formation.

âš  Malfunction of ignition coils - the engine triples, power decreases.

âš  Blown fuses - especially in the lighting and generator circuits.

🔧 Solution: use modern ignition systems (for example, MSD), regularly check the wiring.

4. Body and corrosion

âš  Rust thresholds, wheel arches, underbody - especially in regions with a humid climate.

âš  Rotting of doors and hood from the inside - due to poor factory metal processing.

🔧 Solution: anti-corrosion treatment, replacement of rotten body elements.

5. Suspension and steering

⚠ Wear of bushings and silent blocks – leads to knocking and deterioration of controllability.

⚠ Weak brakes – especially on early versions with drum mechanisms at the rear.

🔧 Solution: replace silent blocks with polyurethane ones, install more powerful brakes.
