Mazda Drifter main problems

1. Engine and its problems

🔧 2.5 WL-T (turbo diesel)

⚠ Overheating – weak radiator, clogged intercooler.

⚠ Cracked cylinder head – a common problem with overheating.

⚠ Turbine wear – whistling, loss of power.

⚠ Fuel injection pump problems – wear of seals after 200,000 km.

✅ Solution:

Cleaning the cooling system every 50,000 km.

Installation of a more efficient radiator.

Regular diagnostics and flushing of the fuel system.

🔧 2.6 G6 (petrol)

⚠ High fuel consumption – on average 12-15 l/100 km.

⚠ Uneven engine operation – problems with ignition, sensors.

✅ Solution:

Regular cleaning of the injector.

Use of high-quality fuel and oil.

 

2. Transmission (5-speed manual)

⚠ Crunching when shifting 2nd gear – wear of synchronizers.

⚠ Hum and vibration – problems with bearings.

✅ Solution:

Change gearbox oil every 60,000 km.

Check the clutch condition.

 

3. Suspension and steering

⚠ Rapid wear of ball joints and silent blocks – especially when driving off-road.

⚠ Play in the steering rack – appears after 150,000 km.

✅ Solution:

Replace silent blocks with polyurethane ones.

Check the steering mechanism every 50,000 km.

 

4. Electrics and wiring

⚠ Generator malfunctions – weak diode bridge, relay problems.

⚠ Oxidation of contacts in connectors – due to moisture.

⚠ Starter problems – the pull-in relay fails.

✅ Solution:

Cleaning contacts and fuses.

Checking the generator every 30,000 km.

 

5. Body and frame corrosion

⚠ Thresholds, arches, and underbody rust – especially on older models.

⚠ The frame rots – if it is not treated with anti-corrosion.

✅ Solution:

Anti-corrosion treatment every 2-3 years.

Cleaning and painting the frame.
