Mazda B6 Engine Typical Problems

1. Oil leak

Causes: Worn valve cover seals or oil seals.

Aging oil sump gasket.

Solution: Replace gaskets and oil seals.

2. Increased oil consumption (oil burner)

Causes: Worn piston rings or valve stem seals.

Symptoms: Smoke from the exhaust pipe (blue tint).

Solution: Overhaul the engine with replacement of worn parts.

3. Engine overheating

Causes: Faulty thermostat or radiator.

Coolant leaks due to cracks in hoses or cylinder head gasket.

Solution: Replace thermostat, radiator or damaged cooling system components.

4. Timing chain or timing belt noise

Causes: Stretched timing chain or worn drive belt.

Worn tensioner or guides.

Solution: Replace the chain or belt together with the components.

5. Problems with the carburetor (on early versions)

Symptoms: Unstable engine operation at idle.

Difficult starting in cold weather.

Solution: Adjust or clean the carburetor, replace with an injection system if possible.

6. Malfunctions of the ignition system

Causes: Worn spark plugs, ignition coil or high-voltage wires.

Symptoms The engine is misfiring, deterioration in dynamics.

Solution: Replace spark plugs, wires or coil.

7. Problems with the fuel supply system

Causes: Clogged fuel filter or injectors.

Failures in the fuel pump.

Symptoms: Loss of power, jerks during acceleration.

Solution: Replace filters, clean injectors or replace the pump.

8. Cylinder block or cylinder head corrosion

Causes: Long-term use of unsuitable coolant or its absence.

Solution: Check the condition of the block and cylinder head, replace parts if necessary.

How to properly service the B6 engine?

  • Change oil and filters regularly, every 7,000–10,000 km.
  • Use only recommended coolants.
  • Check the condition of belts, hoses, and the timing system.
  • Clean or change spark plugs every 20,000–30,000 km.
  • If any strange sounds or odors appear, immediately conduct diagnostics.
