1.5 MZR Engine What are the problems?

The 1.5 MZR engine, which is used in Mazda models such as the Mazda 2, Mazda 3 and Mazda Demio, is a reliable unit, but it has its own characteristics and problems. Here are the main ones:

1. Increased oil consumption

Cause: Wear of piston rings or valve seals, especially at high mileage.

Solution: Diagnose the condition of the cylinder-piston group, replace the piston rings and/or overhaul the engine.

2. Timing chain problems

Cause: Stretching of the timing chain at high mileage, which leads to noise and engine malfunctions.

Solution: Regularly check the condition of the chain and, if necessary, replace the chain and tensioner.

3. Cooling system problems

Cause: Leak through the water pump gasket or wear of the radiator.

Solution: Replace the gasket, pump or radiator, and regularly check the level and quality of the coolant.

4. Clogged EGR valve

Cause: Accumulation of carbon deposits in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve.

Solution: Clean the EGR valve and exhaust gas recirculation system.

5. Mass Air Flow (MAF) Sensor

Cause: Dirty or faulty sensor, causing rough engine operation and increased fuel consumption.

Solution: Clean or replace the MAF sensor.

6. Oil leak

Cause: Worn valve cover gaskets or crankshaft seals.

Solution: Replace gaskets and seals.

7. Engine detonation and knocking

Cause: Low-quality fuel, incorrect ignition, or deposits on the pistons.

Solution: Use high-quality fuel, clean the combustion chamber, diagnose and adjust the ignition system.

8. Injector problems

Cause: Clogged injectors due to low-quality fuel.

Solution: Clean the injectors or replace them.

Care recommendations:

  • Change oil regularly (every 10,000 km or more often in difficult conditions).
  • Use high-quality fuel and additives to clean the injection system.
  • Monitor the coolant level and its condition.
  • Carry out engine diagnostics at the first signs of malfunction.
