The Mazda MX-5 NB (1998–2005) is a reliable car, but with age certain problems may appear. Here is a list of typical faults and what to pay attention to when buying or servicing:
1. Engine
Oil leak:
Often from the valve cover or crankshaft seals.
Check oil level regularly.
Timing belt:
Requires replacement every 60,000 miles. Failure to replace can result in engine damage.
Throttle and sensors:
Problems with the throttle position sensor (TPS) can cause rough idle.
2. Cooling
Radiator:
Over the years, plastic radiator tanks can crack. It is recommended to replace them with an aluminum radiator.
Thermostat:
A sticking thermostat can cause the engine to overheat.
3. Corrosion
Wheel arches and sills:
Vulnerable areas due to moisture and dirt accumulation. It is especially important to check hidden areas.
Underbody:
Rust and damage can form under the underbody, especially if the car has been used in regions with heavy snow and salt.
4. Suspension
Silent blocks:
Over time, they wear out, causing noise and deterioration in handling. Replacing them with polyurethane ones can improve durability.
Shock absorbers:
Factory shock absorbers lose their effectiveness over time.
5. Transmission
Clutch:
Wears out by 120-150 thousand km, especially with an aggressive driving style.
Manual gearbox:
May become noisy at high mileage. Changing the gearbox oil can extend the service life.
Rear differential:
Sometimes there are oil leaks.
6. Electrics
Headlights:
Problems with headlight motors (especially on NA versions) were fixed in NB, but checking the electrics will not be superfluous.
Central locking and window lifters:
May wear out over time.
7. Roof
Fabric soft top:
Prone to wear, especially at the joints.
Water leakage through the seals is a common problem.
Folding mechanism:
Check for smooth operation and absence of jamming.
Pre-purchase recommendations
Check service history: Find out if timing belt, clutch and oil changes have been done on time.
Suspension and body diagnostics: Check for serious damage or corrosion.
OBD-II scan: Check for active or stored codes.
