Main Problems of Mazda RX-7 FC

1. Engine (13B and 13B Turbo)

Apex Seals Wear – A common problem with rotary engines. Overheating, bad oil, or improper operation would cause them to wear out, reducing compression and causing a loss of power.

Overheating – Turbocharged versions were especially sensitive to high temperatures. Cooling system problems (clogged radiator, fan failure) could cause the engine to overheat and be damaged.

High Oil Consumption – The engine design requires constant oil consumption, but many owners did not monitor the level, which led to breakdowns.

Exhaust Manifold Burnout and Turbo Overheating – Turbo versions often had problems with an overheated exhaust tract, which reduced the life of the turbo and caused cracks in the manifold.

2. Electrical

Sensor malfunctions – Coolant temperature sensors, oil pressure sensors and oxygen sensors often failed, which affected the stable operation of the engine.

Wiring problems – Due to the age of the car and the high temperature under the hood, the contacts oxidized, causing interruptions in the operation of electrical equipment.

3. Body corrosion

Like many Japanese cars of the 80s, the RX-7 FC has weak anti-corrosion protection. Problem areas:

  • Fender arches
  • Sills
  • Underbody
  • Rear trunk lid

4. Suspension and steering

Worn steering rack – Especially on models with the Power Steering system, there were leaks in the power steering.

Problems with the rear subframe – In cars with mileage, cracks may appear at the attachment points.

Worn silent blocks and ball joints – Aggravated by aggressive driving.

5. Brake system

Overheating of brake discs – Especially on Turbo versions during active driving.

Calipers sticking – In cold climates, this could lead to brake seizure.

Conclusion

The Mazda RX-7 FC is a great car for enthusiasts, but it requires careful maintenance. The main problems are related to the rotary engine, the cooling system, and the age of the car. Proper maintenance and the use of quality oil help extend the service life. 🚗💨
