Problems, weak points and malfunctions of Nissan VQ35 engines

1. High oil consumption. The root of the evil here is the catalysts, on this engine they are sensitive to the quality of gasoline and can quickly become unusable, simultaneously clogging the lower catalysts with ceramic dust, and then this sand gets into the engine and grinds down the cylinder walls, compression drops, oil and fuel consumption increases, interruptions in engine operation appear, the car constantly stalls, does not start right away, etc. The issue is resolved by overhauling the VQ35DE or replacing the engine, plus buying four new catalysts. To prevent such troubles, you need to immediately go and change the upper catalysts to flame arresters, this will reduce toxicity standards, but the above problem will bypass you.

If the problem is not in the catalysts, then look for the problem in the oil scraper rings.

2. Overheating of the VQ35DE. The problem is not frequent, but it does occur and its consequences are warping of the valve cover, head drift, etc. Check the radiator tanks for leaks, the cooling system for air locks, clean the radiator.

3. Unstable idle speed on the VQ35HR. Most often, the cause is in the exhaust camshaft covers, check and replace them.

All other problems and malfunctions are not systemic in nature and arise from operating conditions. The VQ35DE engine (and VQ35HR) itself is reliable as a hammer, has a huge resource and runs more than 500 thousand km under normal operation. Definitely recommended for purchase.
