The legend of this engine lies, first of all, in its enormous torque, which allows you to safely navigate areas where there is no normal road. With not too much power, this is a unique quality that has made the engine famous at all kinds of competitive rally events.

The advantages of this engine have made its name worldwide and for good reason.

• The engine demonstrates high torque, which greatly helps to pass areas with bad roads without harming the system.
• The TD42 engine is capable of running about a million kilometers without requiring major repairs - this is a statistic that includes the majority of engines sold. This is practically a record; few people can boast of such endurance.
• Older models, manufactured before 1994, handle mediocre fuel very well. Even new engines cannot compare with other representatives of this category, although they are somewhat worse than the old ones.
• The timing belt of these engines does not require special care - in principle, it does not require any maintenance, since everything works on gears, without a belt.

Despite many positive qualities, this motor also has disadvantages:

• high noise level during operation, vibration;
• wear of the timing gears leads to engine tripping and phase failures;
• with significant mileage, leakage may occur in the pump and timing gaskets;
• the oil pressure sensor is detrimental to water ingress; if such a problem occurs, it will have to be replaced, and this is quite expensive;
• In severe frosts, damage such as cutting off the splines on the vacuum pump drive is often observed.
