On TD42, the clearance is 0.35mm for all valves, so you only need one feeler gauge, but even if you don't have it, it's not a problem. I had feeler gauges of 0.3 and 0.4 mm. Therefore, I adjusted it so that the 0.3 mm gauge would pass through easily, while the 0.4 mm gauge would not pass through.
Set the 1st cylinder to top dead center on the compression stroke and adjust valves 1, 2, 4, 5, 8, 9. When the 6th cylinder is at top dead center, adjust valves 3, 6, 7, 10, 11, 12.
The manual states: "Adjust on a warm engine." What does this mean? In my opinion, Nissan doesn't specially warm up the engine when adjusting valves at the factory; the temperature in the workshop is just from +20 to +25 degrees. This is also the engine temperature. This is what they mean by "warm."
Step-by-step operations as required:
- Remove the diffuser;
- Remove the impeller (unscrew 4 bolts that attach it to the coupling);
- Remove the air filter and its housing by unscrewing 6 bolts and pulling off the crankcase gas hose;
- Plug the intake opening so that nothing falls in;
- Remove the valve cover (14 bolts). First, clean the adjacent areas from dirt;
- Remove and replace the gasket on the cover;
- Set the crankshaft to the correct position, as shown in the picture, by turning it with a 41mm wrench. The position of the valves changes with each 360-degree rotation of the crankshaft;
After adjustment, rotate everything and check the clearances again.
