VG33E Engine, how to properly maintain

The VG33E engine is a reliable 3.3-liter V6 engine that was used in the Nissan Pathfinder R50 and other models in the late 1990s and early 2000s Frontier / Navara, Pathfinder, Quest, Xterra. Regular maintenance is important to keep it in good condition. Here are the key points to consider:

  • 1. Change engine oil and oil filter

Recommended interval: Every 5,000-7,500 km or every 6 months (depending on operating conditions).

Oil: Use high-quality engine oil that meets 5W-30 or 10W-30 specifications (depending on climate conditions).

Filter: Change the oil filter at every oil change.

  • 2. Check and replace the timing belt

Recommended interval: Every 100,000-120,000 km.

What to do: Regularly check the belt for wear and replace it at the specified time along with the rollers and tensioner. It is important to replace the water pump at the same time as the timing belt, as its failure can cause serious engine damage.

  • 3. Change the coolant

Recommended interval: Every 2-3 years or every 50,000 km.

What to do: Use only the recommended coolant (antifreeze) mixed with water in a ratio of 50:50. Flush the cooling system before changing the fluid and inspect the condition of the radiator, hoses and thermostat.

  • 4. Servicing the ignition system

Spark plugs: Change the spark plugs every 30,000-40,000 km. Use the recommended NGK or Denso spark plugs with the correct heat range and gap.

High-tension wires: Check the spark plug wires for wear and replace them every 60,000 km or at the first sign of trouble (misfiring, rough running).

Ignition coils: Check the condition of the coils and replace them if cracks, damage or problems with spark formation are found.

  • 5. Replace the air and fuel filters

Air filter: Replace every 15,000-20,000 km or at every service if operated in dusty conditions.

Fuel filter: Replace every 60,000-80,000 km to prevent fuel delivery problems and improve fuel system performance.

  • 6. Check the cooling system and belts

Alternator, air conditioning and power steering belt: Check for cracks and wear every 20,000 km, replace if necessary.

Cooling system hoses and clamps: Check for leaks and wear every 30,000 km.

  • 7. Check the valve clearance and valve cover gasket

Checking the valve clearance: The VG33E engine uses a hydraulic valve lifter, so manual clearance adjustment is usually not required. However, if there is a knocking or noise, consult a specialist.

Valve Cover Gasket: Over time, oil may begin to leak. Check and replace the gasket if leaks occur.

  • 8. Checking the Fuel Delivery System

Injectors and Throttle Body: Clean the injectors and throttle body every 40,000-50,000 km to maintain optimal engine performance.

  • 9. Servicing the Battery and Alternator

Battery: Check the charge level and the condition of the terminals. Clean the terminals from corrosion and check the electrolyte level (if it is not a maintenance-free one).

Alternator: Regularly check the alternator belt tension and the condition of the cables. Check the output voltage of the alternator (usually 13.8-14.4 V).

  • 10. Servicing the Exhaust System

Catalytic Converter and Exhaust System: Regularly check for leaks, cracks and damage. Pay attention to the condition of the oxygen sensors, as their malfunction can lead to increased fuel consumption and reduced power.
