1. Increased oil consumption
Problem description: Many owners have reported increased oil consumption, especially on engines with high mileage. This is due to the design features of the piston rings and increased engine operating temperatures.
Prevention: Check the oil level regularly, use oil of the recommended type and viscosity level. It is also useful to clean the crankcase gases and periodically replace the valve stem seals.
2. Timing chain stretching
Problem description: Over time, the timing chain stretches, especially if the engine is operating under severe conditions. This leads to disruption of the valve timing and a decrease in power.
Prevention: Checking the timing chain every 100-150 thousand km and replacing it at the first signs of wear will help avoid serious damage.
3. Engine overheating
Problem description: Water pumps, radiators and thermostats on the VK45DE are subject to wear, which can lead to overheating. This is especially critical for aluminum blocks, as overheating can cause deformation and damage to the cylinder head.
Prevention: Perform regular cooling system maintenance, clean the radiator, change the coolant on time, and monitor the condition of the water pump and thermostat.
4. Sensor failures (MAF and O2)
Problem description: Problems with the mass air flow (MAF) sensor and oxygen sensors can cause engine rough running, loss of power, and increased fuel economy.
Prevention: Clean and check the MAF sensor every 30-50 thousand km. Replace the oxygen sensors every 100 thousand km or when performance deteriorates.
5. Worn ignition coils
Problem description: The ignition coils on this engine can fail over time, causing misfires, loss of power, and increased fuel economy.
Prevention: Perform coil diagnostics every 50-70 thousand km, replace them if misfires occur.
6. Oil leaks
Problem description: Valve cover gaskets and the front crankshaft oil seal are subject to wear, which can lead to oil leaks.
Prevention: Regularly inspect the engine for oil leaks and replace worn seals and gaskets.
