ENGINE RATING: 4+
The largest representative of the VQ family was developed in 2005 for SUV, produced in the USA and based on the 3.5-liter VQ35. To create a new 4-liter engine, the VQ35HR cylinder block was taken, its height was increased, a long-stroke crankshaft (piston stroke 92 mm) and new connecting rods were placed inside. This block was covered with two slightly modified heads from the VQ35DE with a variable valve timing system on the intake camshafts C-VTC. Characteristics of the shafts on the VQ40: phase 240/244, lift 10.0/9.6 mm. There are no hydraulic compensators on this engine, valve adjustment is required every 100 thousand km. VQ40DE engines were equipped with an electronic throttle valve, a lower plastic intake manifold, and a different exhaust system. The VQ40DE timing drive uses a chain, which is quite reliable.
Along with the VQ40DE, the VQ series also included other engines: VQ37VHR, VQ35, VQ30, VQ25, VQ23 and VQ20.
Problems and disadvantages of Nissan VQ40 engines
The problems of this engine are similar to those common on the 3.5 liter VQ35DE/HR. You can read about them here.
