10th generation (R34, 1998-2002):
Skyline GT-R (R34). The last Skyline produced under the GT-R name before the model was renamed the Nissan GT-R.
The Nissan Skyline R34 is an iconic sports car, but like any car, it has its typical problems and weak points. Here are the main ones:
1. RB26DETT Engine
Oil Starvation: The high-performance RB26DETT engine is prone to oil starvation, especially when driven aggressively. The stock oil pump has limitations, which can lead to a drop in oil pressure at high RPMs, which can lead to engine damage.
Turbo Wear: Stock turbos are equipped with ceramic wheels, which are less resistant to high loads and temperatures. They can crack or break when the engine is forced.
Oil Leakage: Over time, seals and gaskets can wear out, leading to oil leaks, especially from the valve covers and oil pan.
2. Transmission
Synchronizer Issues: Models with a manual transmission, especially when driven aggressively, can wear out synchronizers over time, leading to difficult shifting, especially when downshifting. Automatic Transmission: Rare R34 models with automatic transmission may experience problems with overheating and wear, especially if not serviced on time.
3. Suspension
Worn Bushings: The suspension arm bushings can wear out quickly due to the harsh characteristics of the sports suspension and aggressive driving style. This leads to poor handling and knocking.
Shock Absorbers: Stock shock absorbers are prone to wear, especially if the car is used on the track or on roads with poor surfaces.
4. Brakes
Overheating Brake: On GT-R modifications, the braking system is highly effective, but under aggressive driving on the track, it is prone to overheating. This can lead to deformation of the brake discs and reduced braking efficiency.
Brake Pad Wear: Rapid wear of the pads is a common problem, especially on the sports versions of the R34.
5. Body and corrosion
Corrosion: Despite good protection, the R34 body can be susceptible to corrosion, especially in the suspension mounts, underbody and wheel arches. This is especially true for cars driven in regions with harsh climates or high humidity.
Plastic elements: Over time, plastic parts of the body kit and interior can crack and break due to aging of the material.
6. Electronics
Wiring problems: Aging wiring can lead to malfunctions of electronics, including headlights, gauges and the instrument panel.
Engine control unit (ECU): In the case of tuning and installation of modified control units, problems with engine tuning and stability may occur.
7. Drive and differentials
Clutch wear: Aggressive driving can quickly wear out the clutch, especially if reinforced versions with high torque are installed.
Differentials: LSD differentials can become noisy and show signs of wear with long-term use or inadequate maintenance (oil changes).
